Ottiya
Ottiya is a creative learning content studio and platform for kids ages 5-12. They create content that is meaningful, fun, and creative for kids all over the world
Objectives
Creating a gamified learning app that would encourage kids to practise the Korean words they learned during class
Deliverables
App design/ development
Ottiya asked us to create an app for kids between 5 and 12 y.o. that would create a fun, enjoyable experience out of revising the words the students learned during class in the morning
The app’s goal is to be very simple and consistent so that all kids in the age range of the target group would be able to understand how the app works and independently play
We designed simple navigations making sure to use common visual elements that kids have seen before and can recognise and avoiding text only buttons to support non-readers
The touch targets are also bigger than the standard so that kids that are still developing their motor skills can easily interact with them
The learning game for the kids is based on flashcards and there’s an easy version and a hard one, to create more of a challenge for the older experienced students
In general the game shows the kids a flashcard with either both the object and the korean word or only the object and then they have to tap on the right answer out of two or four options depending which version of the game they’re playing
How is the game kids friendly?
In the game there’s not unnecessary distractions, the kids are facilitated in staying focused; only essential sounds and visual to enhance their learning outcomes are included:
-Visual of the object
-Pronunciation sound of korean word
-Progress bar on top of the screen
-A little character that guides them throughout the game/app
-Visual hints in the easy version
Moreover, Gestures are kept simple. No multi-finger/ pinch gestures/ double tap.
Kids simply have to tap on the word and the game is done!
Feedback pages are also a very important aspect for a successful kids learning app
Children need instant gratification if they’ve done well and they need encouragement if they got the answer wrong
This is why in the feedback pages we made sure to combine instant sound reaction and suitable visuals (colors, illustrations)
